Nice shot giving an over-all view of the ammo storage and the doors you photographed and posted last Saturday. That's an awfully long distance for a pair of 5 inch guns to cover. I wonder who this fort was to defend against. What was the military reasoning behind it? Defence against invasion from Canada? Or who? Looks like you've just survived a major downpour. Good excuse to step inside the doors to keep dry! Thanks for the link to the web site about the fort! Interesting with the drawings and the Google Map image. Keep up the good work! :-)

I always find it interesting to visit these old fortifications and pause to give thought of who was there in the past guarding their country outstanding subject

Fine POV and array of lush colors and overall clarity and depth on this shot, Bill. And I don't live far from San Pedro where the USS Iowa will permanently dock. The distance is no problem, but the huge throngs of visitors and questionable parking space available will sure be.

And lets hope they never have to be used again. A great shot with the lovely scene in the background.

It's a good thing it was there to keep us Canucks out, otherwise you'd all be saying "Y'all come on down, eh?" Nice shot Bill, hope it stays that way for another 95 years!

Wonderful shot of this old stand; I'm glad it's not needed now, and hope it doesn't ever have to be reawakened!

the structure itself looks wholly like an old battery compound, a fortress. It's low, it's compact, and it's built to withstand battering (and give it out). And age has shown itself everywhere on this big monolith, taking away from the monolithic qualities and giving it real life. You captured all that. But your composition is something else, wonderfully harmonized with the horizon, so that all the building-activity is taking place beneath the horizon-line---for us---and it all leads inexorably TO the horizon-line...at which point, whoosh: It opens up to serene sky, water and clouds. (And a mountain range back there too.) Wonderful combination & seeing. And those low flattened trees on the left are perfect 'pointers' to the water and sky. A very dramatic composition, in which you turn a photo of an otherwise clumpish thing into a sweeping journey. And the battery itself is given to us with enough detail to make it complex and wholly fascinating. (And alive.) A really fine shot, Bill. With real sweep.
