Description

... but it defeated my Collins Book Of European Butterflies & Moths. Size is about 40mm wide. Attached itself to my leg while I was gardening today. Not sure it didn't bite me; I certainly felt it latch on to me, & when I saw it, it made me jump!! It's sitting quite happily under the dustbin 5 hours later, presumably waiting for it to get dark. Please, please zoom!! ~Steve~

I think it is a Lime Hawkmoth male. Mimas tiliae. Am I jealous? Yes! We have a huge lime tree at the back door, and I see nibbled leaves but not a caterpillar or adult for years!
