Description
These fields are in Cove, Navajo Reservation, Arizona and were at one time irrigated with diverted surface water from Cove Wash. After the diversion dam was destroyed these fields are now dry farmed.
Our so-called 'Monsoon', an influx of tropical moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and the Sea of Cortez usually between July to mid-September, brings enough moisture to Western Texas, Southern New Mexico and Southeastern Arizona to allow for isolated thunderstorms.
In the area of Cove, near the border with New Mexico, these thunderstorms usually result in enough precipitation to allow a crop to be grown without irrigation.

What an incredible landscape. As beautiful as it is, I don't think I could live there. The Navajo are some rare and strong people indeed.
