What a cute and enchanting scene! You really convey a lot of emotion between the older man and the young boy. You can see the warmth in the old man's smile and the innocent joy in the boy's face and gesture. I also like the details of the golden textures on the man's shirt -- they bring a little light and help underscore that he contains the golden wisdom of old age. I do wonder if the background was a separate render, though, as all the figures seem to be in front of it, rather than in it. By this I mean that the foreground lighting doesn't seem to completely match the background lighting. Also, if you were to move the background just a little bit so that the open area behind the trees was between the figures, the trees would then serve more as a frame for the figures and draw our eyes to the space between the figures. I know this sounds like it might make it more dull, but I think it would actually serve to enhance the classic feel of an Old-Masters painting, which is sort of the look you're going for here. By the way, when I viewed it at full size, I was really taken by the details of texture on the boy's shirt. It was really nice! And I didn't even see those owls there until I went full size. What a fun surprise! Thanks very much for posting a great image (even though it's someone else's birthday, we get to share in the gift).

Great posing and expressions; like the lush foliage and the background fading into the distance. The lighting is unnatural for a nature scene: the figures are lit using overly bright light, like there are big lamps just feet away and yet there are no shadows. Using more sunlight and indirect distant lighting will really sell the outdoor location.
