Description

The Red Panda is an endangered animal due to deforestation. They are much smaller then their relative the Giant Panda. Unlike the Giant Panda, bamboo is not the only thing on the menu. They will also consume, acorns, eggs, fruits and roots. The Red and Giant Pandas do share the same high rainy altitude habitat. The Red Panda has a wider range, from the mountains of Nepal to Northern Myanmar (Burma), and central China. They spend most of there lives in the trees. They have an extended wrist bone that functions somewhat like a thumb, enabling them to grip things. These Pandas even sleep in the trees, most activity is at night, dusk and dawn. Their ringed tail wraps around themselves like a blanket, it gets chilly in the mountains. They are shy solitary creatures except mating time. Birth is given from Spring into Summer. Young Red Pandas, typically 1-4, remain in the nest for 90 days under the Mother's care. The Red Panda has been classified as a relative of both the Giant Panda and the Raccoon. Currently they are considered their own unique family, the Ailuridae.
