Hi, I am Sig (junge1),
I was born in Dominikus- Krankenhaus in Berlin-Hermsdorf, Bezirk Reinickendorf in December 1939. Bezirk Reinickendorf was one of 20 Bezirke that made up Gross-Berlin before World War II and one of 12 Bezirke that made up former West-Berlin, the other 8 Bezirke were Russian occupied and became East-Berlin after the war. Moved from Berlin to Neurohlau (Nova Role) Sudetenland (now Czech Republic), in August 1943 (our entire block of apartment buildings was bombed out in November 1943) and returned back to Berlin in November 1945. Saw my dad the first time in my life in August/September 1946 after he returned from POW camp. Attended elementary school in Berlin-Waidmannslust, high school in Berlin-Hermsdorf, and trade school in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Was an apprentice for the trade of Klischeeaetzer (photo engraver) at Burrath & Schmidt on Friedrichstrasse between U-Bahnhof Kochstrasse (near to what later became Checkpoint Charlie) and Hallisches Tor.
While watching Allied planes supplying West-Berlin by air during the Berliner Luftbruecke in 1948-49 I developed my love for aircraft. I guess I could be considered a 'Berliner Grosschnauze", or at least I used to be.
'Wanderlust' led me to leave Berlin in summer 1960 to emigrate to Toronto, Canada and in February 1962 to move from Canada to New York City, NY, USA. In January 1963 I joined the United States Air Force, one step ahead of Uncle Sam drafting me. Became a United States citizen within 7 weeks after it became a security issue because of my military career. One day after I was sworn in as a citizen in Seattle, my entire unit left for Southeast Asia in June 1966. After nearly 5 years of active duty (extended 11 months to make it an 18 months overseas deployment) I got discharged and moved to New York City. In 1973 I moved to Phoenix, Arizona and two years later joined the Arizona Air National Guard.
Received my higher education at Arizona State University and the University of Georgia and worked for 22 years for the Arizona Department of Water Resources in various capacities. Upon military retirement in 1999 and State retirement in 2005 I looked at a number of things to keep me occupied. Traveling and joining 'renderosity' in September 2007 were a couple of them,
Sig..

Cool photo. I saw this one when I was heading south on the 51 freeway. I was able to make it home just when it hit.

Some radically changing weather...I vividly recall my two years in the Mohave...next to no precipitation...but lots of wind/dust storms, oops I mean Haboobs:) Well done Sig...and sounds like you are really enjoying your new car!

That's quite a cloud! I'm sure you zipped that little beauty into the garage after you took this picture. :P Mid-60s and rain here. Come on up!

IMPRESSIONNANT !!

Used to live on Betheny home road in Phoenix, not so much a Monsoon meca. When I lived in Tucson you could just about set your watch by them. The mass of clouds would consume the Santa Rita Mountains and by five the downpour would begin. Always tried to be home by then. :~) Hope you have a garage to put that new car in!

That was some drive and a great story. I flew out of Phoenix a year ago May to come home to the UK. Nice pic.

Thats a tempting offer Tara. I sure enjoyed using the windshield wipers, it rained just a little too hard. Going along in the right lane (everybody about 30mph) I almost made a right turn. Hit a puddle that just about ripped the steering wheel out of my hand. Luckily for me it was a small puddle. We haven't had rain for so long that I forgot all the pitfalls of heavy precip.

Yes this is my Z and yes, the wind hit just when I pulled into the garage and closed the door. Normally I leave the garage door open a crack in the hope for it cool. Doesn't make any difference, in the afternoon the temp in the garage is 108F (~42C) and in the morning the temp is 95F (35C). It is a battery killer!

Fantastic image!!!

I averaged 36.1 mpg going to Globe and Tucson (with about 36 miles on that tank before I left - not enough to top off and 40.5 mpg coming back up from Tucson going 75-80 but with the wind blowing in the general direction I was traveling. When I came into Phoenix, the sun was shining through diffused haze and all the traffic signs on the freeway were lit up warning of a duststorm and poor visibilty.

The high temperatures in the garage are battery killers. I got 3 1/2 years out of my last two car batteries on the BMWs and only 2 years out of the Yaris. It should be interesting how much a new battery for this car will cost, it stores energy generated from braking (similar to the KERS system on Formula 1 race cars). This energy allows the engine to shot off when coming to a complete stop and the load on the battery is not too heavy. It saves gas.

Checked the 24 hour water vapor loop on the satellite and that storm showed up mid afternoon.

So ein Flitzer muss doch allem Stand halten können, abgesehen von einem Tornado, da hast du ja noch wirklich Glück im Unglück gehabt!
