Description

Periapsis: Racing The Clouds Of Jove An Orion’s Arm Future History Image Callisto Base Module Transport (as featured in my most recent previous post) seen here at closest approach to Jupiter. Note: The Callisto vehicles do not perform any aero braking at Jupiter, or interact with its atmosphere in any manner. Braking is entirely propulsive aided by a gravitational braking sling-shot maneuver – this is accomplished by diving deep into Jupiter’s gravity well and passing in a tight orbit around Jupiter, and firing the Orion against the vehicles orbital direction as the vehicle moves outward from point of closest approach. All models are my own Bryce creations, constructed in Bryce 6.3 and rendered in Bryce 7 Pro. Jupiter image created by wrapping NASA/JPL sourced images of Jupiter’s clouds around a sphere, rendering the image, rendering an image mask of both the planetary sphere and the vehicle separately, then working the layers in Photoshop for transparency and depth. Photographic resources: Jupiter, Io, and Europa courtesy of NASA/JPL. As always thank you for your interest, thoughtful comments, and encouragement.

Very nice! You've done a great job with the Jupiter sphere, giving it a real sense of depth. And I like that the moons are to scale. Great modeling as always. And using a bit of Oberth to brake is a lot safer than diving into the clouds.

I agree, the POV is wonderful. Your research and careful attention to the realities of physics adds so much to the quality of your work. I love how Jupiter looks in this view as well. Great stuff!
