Also known as Sawfish, they actually belong to the Ray family. They are nocturnal, and despite their fearsome appearance are not aggressive unless provoked. These beautiful creatures are fully protected in Australian waters.

A sawfish! Long time since I heard about one or saw a picture of one! Glad to re-establish the acquantance! Very nice photo. The waves really got me to wonder what this was. Truely one of nature's more odd creatures. Thanks for posting this. Keep up the good work! :-)

They are fierce looking. I've seen some, but dead on the pier for fishermen, in La Libertad port. Cool capture, the ondulated appearance is great.

Strangely enough, when I read 'Carpenter shark' - I immediately thought of Hammerhead shark, but no! wrong turn ;) a new species for moi ... this image has an amazing clarity and perfect colour manipulation, I love this! BB
