i KNOW it's supposed to get better with time, but it seems to be worse, maybe just need MORE time.

Excellent image! I think she's lovely. I'm always my own harshest critic and I've found that if I'm not happy with a piece, setting it aside and working on something else then going back to it gives me a fresh prespective. However, I think you did great here!
