Description

Click Here to listen. In my younger years—back in the twentieth century—I read a short novel by Francis Lia Block. The novel in question was called Weetzie Bat and it involves...well...a girl named Weetzie Bat, who meets a genie and meets a man by the name of "My Secret Agent Lover Man." It's that kind of a novel, and in the midst of its California dream imagery (including a rubber chicken wearing Burt Reynolds' hair toupee) the author paused long enough to allow a character to declare: "Love is a dangerous angel." Those words stuck with me for quite some time, and I've experienced (and am still experiencing) that dangerous angel. What a marvel it is. As I sat at Corey's, watching Pinky and the Brain cartoons on YouTube, it struck me that I had the raw material for a number of new spin and jiggle shots. As I hadn't posted very many spin-and-jiggles of late, I decided to rectify that situation. At some random, late-night hour, I logged onto Corey's computer, downloaded a photo from my camera, opened the Gimp, and went to work on something...a shape hidden within an oddly symmetrical blur. The source photo was created by my normal spin and jiggle method, with more emphasis on jiggling rather than spinning...there was a wrist turn involved as well, so I guess this could be classified as a spin/jiggle/wrist-flick photo-manipulation. As with the other Neon Abstracts, this is a simple blur, copied into various layers with the qualities of those layers tweaked to within an inch of their lives. The image (as you presumably see above this text) is what emerged. I think it's inspired by one declaration that love is a dangerous angel and another equating falling in love with standing in a ring of fire. There's a massive load of old symbolism in this, and I find that fascinating. Love. Such a strange, dangerous, fiery angel. Contemplating it is as much fun as actually being in it, though perhaps, a bit safer, especially if it's international, multi-lingual Love...that gets rather interesting at times. I finished the photo-manipulation, went to sleep, had strange dreams I do not remember, and awoke with Johny Cash singing in my mind. I have to say that I actually like Johny Cash a lot, but I also have to say that he makes a very strange and slightly spooky muse. The kind of muse that doesn't whisper suggestions and inspiration into your metaphorical ear: no...the Johny Cash muse drops his deep, deep voice right on top of you, leaving you to squirm from under it, and once you're out, he picks it up and drops it on you again. Johny Cash has proven to be that kind of a muse. At least he seems to like spin and jiggle photography...or maybe he just has a thing for rings of fire. Who knows? At any rate, here's my most recent spin and jiggle, complete with Johny Cash, singing about a burnin' ring of fire...though to be fair to Johny Cash, perhaps the most accurate pronunciation of that phrase should be a burnin' ring of faar. I will admit, however, I simply love the trumpet accompaniment of that song, and I'm sure that they have worked their way, inexorably, into this image. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and remember, if Johny Cash starts singing in the back of your mind, you might get a rather nifty photograph or photo-manipulation from it.

I grew up hearing Johnny Cash also, but mostly forgot until I saw Joaquin Phoenix play him in "Walk the Line". Brilliant portrayal, and since then I seem to have developed a new taste for his lower-than-low deep voice. Wonderful work as always on this image and narrative, Chip!

Johnny Cash is now singing his way through my brain! A fabulous spin-and-jiggle (with wrist flick), and it's a treat to see one of these again! Good stuff.
