Description
I wasn't around in the 1930s, but I do remember the late 40s. Yup, I'm starting to get older than dirt.
My memories of the late 40s and the 50s are nice. Life seemed to be kinder, friendlier, simpler. And it probably was for many of us. I do realize for some in the U.S. those were not the best of times, but I can only speak for myself. And heck, what does a little girl know. I remember the Korean War and also remember my Pop being away for several weeks while doing Reserve duty. I remember "Give 'em hell, Harry (Truman)." It was a time when playing during the summer under a blanket draped over a hammock was really the best, especially when also playing "telephone" with the "can and string" set up. It was also a time when I would occasionally get a ride home from grade school in a car that had a rumble seat. Now, that was fun!
It was a time when people actually spoke to one another without earphones hanging from their ears. No email or texting back then. You had something to say to someone, you actually spoke to them. People even held books while reading (I still do--love the feel of a book in my hands). Phone calls in my town went through an operator. Our number was 5204M. Pretty simple, huh?
Kids actually spent time outside playing or trying not to get caught while doing something just a bit naughty. No guns, no drugs in my kid's world. Kids were in good shape too. I don't remember any fat kids back then. Kids learned how to interact with one another, face to face, and not over an Internet, iPhone or some other dehumanizing instrument. No wonder there is so much misunderstanding among so many groups in the U.S. today--these people likely have forgotten how to, or perhaps never learned how to, socialize in a personal way. Folks seem to be unable to resolve differences in civilized ways. No respect.
Please, don't get me wrong, twitter, etc. have led to very important and needed initiatives. But there has to be some balance. Put your iPhone, Blackberry, etc. down for several hours a day. Try to enjoy and experience the real world around you and not live your life in some artificial, and often meaningless, reality. Just take those earphones out of your ears. Get outside and look up at the sky. Get some sun. Listen to the sounds around you. Talk to people.
Well, I guess it's time to get off my soapbox. Gotta get dressed and shove off to my local green market. Have to catch up on the local news and gossip.
Thanks for dropping by and make sure you have a good one.
