Description

Needs a full size peek. This is the source of the water that supplied the baths and Perge and indeed supplied water for the largest portion of the city. This is the Fountain of the Acropolis. You can see almost dead center the remains of a reclining statue. That is Kestros, God of the local river. Below Kestros is a gutter. Water flowed from a stream out of the hillside, through the gutter and then fell as a waterfall fountain into the pool which you can see just left and below center. This fountain was built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in about 130-150 A.D. An acropolis, literally a city on high ground, was built on the hill behind the fountain. This would have been the last defensive position of the city. A open manmade channel of many linked pools, some 300 meters long, ran from this pool and ultimately fed the baths, but its main purpose was to supply water to the city in an aesthetically pleasing way. This channel I will show you next. You can see stairs on either side. These lead behind the fountain and you can then stand under the arch and look out onto the channel. Statues would have stood on either side of Kestros. It must have been truely an amazing site when it was functioning - with noisy waterfalls providing a lovely ambiance in a normally parched city. Originally there would have been a roof and this would have been a lovely shaded spot to come and collect water and to exchange daily gosip.

A beautiful composition. I love the variety of architectural forms, the gradations of color in the stone & the way the shadows from the columns fall on the irregular paving. I usually find tourists wandering around annoying in photos, but they look fine here - almost as if you had carefully placed them in just the right positions...

An impressive photo and for me, a reminder that Greece should be helped today in this economic turmoil the country is going through, because of that daring, magnificent and sophisticated level of democracy and civilization that Greece invented before any other country.

Look like hot and sweaty travel but I would so brave the elements to see these ancient ruins! Superb capture as usual, pricking my own wanderlust...what is stirring me most is the green grass atop the monuments--so vivid--can almost see them blades a-swaying...

An excellent photo, Roxy - and love your information and insights. It must have been idyllic in its heyday. With the way the acropolis was built on a hill, it sort of reminds me of Minas Tirith, the White City in LOTR.

They were exceptional at combining aesthetics with usefulness and practicality. That reveals a very high society.

So intriguing to know that they had local gods as well as the major ones. One has to wonder if the local gods were not left over from previous more primitive people who had settle the region originally. Art is so right about the aesthetics combined with use. It is far and away removed from our water towers and pumps, etc to have such grand statuary and pillars. Makes me sad that it all fell away and into darkness. Thank you for sharing!
