Learning Hindi... by KarmaSong

This photo was taken in a modest school in the Indian state of Rajasthan, somewhere in the countryside between the cities of Jaipur and Jodhpur. For me as for the rest of the bunch of French visitors and friends I was travelling with, the vision of these children and teenagers squatting on the floor ( there wasn't a single desk and chair in the classrooms),studying, listening to the teacher with utmost silent respect, was a real shock. Far from the high standards of comfort and digital equipment of French schools, and away from the boisterous, unruly and disruptive behaviour of many young schoolkids in the western world, the concentration, motivation and thirst for knowledge of these young Indians spoke for themselves. Thanks to them, I have now a better view of what the words ' developing country ' and ' emerging market' mean.
These children learning Hindi and English are the children of the new world, as ours is aging and receding, economically speaking.I was told that India has 29 official languages by now, and several hundreds which are spoken though non-official. I saw for myself that the linguistic legacy of the British Empire may be officially acknowledged, but English is far from being the lingua franca of the Republic of India. I was also amazed by the way many Indians mix Hindi and English as they are talking to one another, which is after all, natural, as neither Hindi nor English are the native languages of most Indians.
Thank you very much for visiting my gallery and for your friendly and supportive comments on my last Indian pic. Please zoom in, and have a nice day!

What a precious photo. The humble surroundings are outstanding. The hunger to learn and expand their education is astounding. Thanks for sharing.

this is a superb study of learning in progress. I have experience of working in a school in Tamil Nadu AND THE ENTHUSIASM TO LEARN IS A JOY TO BEHOLD.

A fabulously illuminated composition, painter-like.A glimpse into a world most of us wil never experience first hand, Jean-Luc.

Wow, this is a photo full of grace. You captured the moment of quiet concentration just perfectly. Your color balance, the play of light and shadows gives power to a serene scene. Your commentary is also engaging. The spoilt brats of the west, more concerned about access to u-tubes and video games, who almost celebrate their ignorance and lack of academic expertise will be dusted by these young Indians; they are the ones who will inheret the earth.

Jean-Luc, as always it is a true pleasure to see you post again my friend. This is one of those images that makes you stop in your tracks and contemplate everything around you. What strikes me most is the contrast between these children and the children of supposedly more modern societies. Your point about the respect and reverence they showed their teachers was noted and that is a quality to be emulated. These kids realize how fortunate they are to be able to learn, and really are taking it all in. Sadly so many of our students are spoiled and worried about how to skip class or what they need to be protesting next. Is it any wonder why scholastic standards in countries such as my own art on the decline while they are rapidly rising in countries like India. That is why I say to applaud these kids their parents and the teachers were obviously working hand-in-hand for all of their futures

Amo a foto.+++++++++++5
