Description

These 5 Beech trees have stood for over 100 years at Victoria Cottage Homes in Jersey. Three of them have been deemed as suffering from a severe fungal disease with the other two likely to succumb to the same disease in a very short period of time. The work to start removing them will begin tomorrow 16/07/2012. As you can see one of the trucks is in place already. They are going to be replaced with an avenue of semi mature trees - the area is at Five Oaks so the hope is that Oaks will replace them. The wood from the Beech trees is being donated to a number of trusts as well as Durell's for the gorilla complex. The Victoria Cottage Homes were originally established to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, although His Majesty King Edward VII was on the throne by the time they were opened. On 12th February 1903. I will take some more photo's at time goes on - a sad day for all. Full size view shows how lovely the area is despite being right on a main road and shows all 5 trees

It is sad but, I suppose, it is better to remove them than risk infecting other healthy trees in the area.

Such a shame about the trees, but thank goodness they will be put to good use, and that they will be replaced by oaks. Great photography Susan, hugs Jane xx
