Description
This was a test of creating a planetary ring system that I could get close enough to to see individual rocks.
30,000 rocks!
And a volumetric cloud.
Took a while to render that one.

Wow, this is superb work Phil.

Thanks - And just incase anyone wants to know how I did it. I created a torus in Wings Imported it into Carrara, flattened it. Imported an asteroid from wings Created a surface replicator Sourced the torus, Replicated the asteroid, increased from 100 rocks to 10,000 Random rotation and size and hey presto a ring. Then duplicated that whole thing a few times.

Interesting image Phil... you've gone this far I hope you will take it further... be nice to see the ship more in the foreground..larger..if you are willing.. I would reduce the rocks down 50% and tone done the planet a bit..too sharp. I like the vol.cloud and how it is causing streaks amongst the rocks. Your close to making a real epic scene here and I think it desires some additional time.. You might consider making it even wider ..more space to the right that would be darker and that's where you could place a larger ship..it would catch the light still, be a bit separate from all the rings detail and draw a line of sight from it to the distance light source. I would make this many comments if I didn't like where you are going with it. Also like seeing how you are using lots of programs to achieve your end result. Don

A very impressive and dramatic scene - aren't replicators fun!

Just wonderful.well done.

That is a very impressive image and an imaginative use of replicators. I hate to break it to you though, that would be a massively unstable ring system. It would probably last about 5 minutes before it became completely chaotic. I wouldn't want to fly a ship near it. Could prove a little too interesting. Try a gas giant for the planet. (small tip, try replicating a replicator, it saves on having to duplicate all the time and you can rapidly build up very high densities as each replicator multplies the previous one).

Phil, I think you did an excellent job on this image but I would have to agree with (London224) as to the size of your rocks as they look (IMHO) too uniform. Even though there are different sizes they look to similar plus too evenly dispersed. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to work with so many objects in a single picture as I can attest to doing something similar when I render one of my Mars Lander pictures and you see lost of rocks and boulders strewn around. I am curious, how long did it take you to render this image and what was the actual size Height/Width and polygons and megs all together? Phil, as always, great imagination and excellent modeling and presentation. I look forward to your next render my friend. All the best, David

I like the fact that you decided to share how this came about for those that care to know the what's and the hows like myself....Very Very Impressive results!!

You must have re-sized the torus after duplicating yes? Amazing work.

Fantastic sci-fi image.
