I love the balance in this shot: two sorts of beauty--overt and obvious beauty (who dislikes flowers, after all, especially roses?) and a subtler, equally exquisite, but challenging beauty: the spider itself. There's an undeniable beauty in predatory things rumored to bite, and it's as legitimate and as noble as the beauty of flowers, and I love the balance of each form of beauty in this shot. The desaturation is a brilliant touch, as it seems to call attention to the shapes and relationships between the two subjects of this photo, and it evokes a completely different (and unexpected) set of emotions. There's a dream-like quality to this image as well, as if it's a fading memory. Well, that's how I see it...but then, I go around seeing things in that way on a regular basis. I'm weird like that.

I really like the composition and lighting you have here. When reading your comment that you desaturated a red rose into this gentle and perfectly toned dusty pink I was floored! Absoluted stunning photoshop work here. The gentle seafoam green of the spider against the pink is perfect in mood. The DOF is the TINIEST bit off (getting the all the spiders legs and the rose center in focus), but I dont know if going with a smaller apeture would have gotten the same overall mood so I would say its probably just right. I'm guessing an f6.0 would have been your next jump and may have brought too much in focus. So many times you see a white background for a flower picture but I think your choice of the black was spot on! Thank you for sharing this one.
