I revisited the ruins of the Abbey of Villers last Saturday, in the rain.

What an astonishing piece of beauty, both architectural beauty and historical beauty. It's funny, I'm thinking of Abbeys quite a lot now, as I've just finished re-reading the science fiction classic: A Canticle for Leibowitz, but I somehow think that this abbey and the monastery in that novel have very little in common. This is a stunning, gorgeous photo and it evokes quite a large number of feelings. Brilliant!

Dit is prachtig. Een oud kerkje, dacht ik. Maar het is vernieuwd en omlijst. This is wonderful. An old church, I thought. But it is renewed and framed.

The best time to photograph at sites like this. The sky diffuses the light so you can see details normally in shadows and the people disappear as if they were sugar... Wot's a little rain, eh lad?
