Description

I just HAD to post something tonight after hearing the devastating news of Bobby's death, from my Son, Stephen. After fighting bravely against an inoperable cancerous tumour on the brain, Bob Babbitt, passed away peacefully in hospital, on Monday at age 74. Signed, Sealed, Delivered, (Stevie Wonder) Cool Jerk, (Capitols) What's Going On (Marvin Gaye) There's a Ghost In My House (R Dean Taylor) Bob Babbitt played bass on over 200 number one records, including hits by:- Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra, Gladys Knight, Del Shannon, Edwin Starr, Temptations, Mary Wells, Four Tops, Junior Walker & The All Stars, Freda Payne, Shorty Long, Martha Reeves, Jimmy Ruffin, Isley Brothers, Chairman of the Board, Supremes, Smokey Robinson & Bobby Taylor (and the Vancouvers).... Barry Manilow, The O'Jays, Gloria Gaynor.... The list goes on and on. Bobbie, was the string bass mainstay of the Motown Orchestra, those unsung heroes, called the Funk Brothers, who have featured on more number one hits, than the Beatles, Beach Boys, Elvis and the Rolling Stones, combined. I am a massive soul fan and in particular, Bob's bass style and I managed to contact Bob a few years ago and kept in touch with him until quite recently. You will find a link to his recent American Idol appearance if you follow the link below and navigate to BREAKING NEWS on the left of the page:- http://bobbabbitt.com/Bob_Babbitts_Site/Home.html If you have trouble with this link, just let me know please.... He was a lovely guy to know. I would love to have met him in person and worked with him on stage or in Studio, somewhere. Furthermore, if you would like to know more about the background and origin of the sound behind Motown, I can strongly recommend a DVD going by the title of:- Standing In The shadows of Motown. Well worth a view. GOOD to see all those great masters playing together, live, with loads of commentary by band members. Many of whom, are now sadly departed. Miss you Bobby! Steve :(
