Description

First of a whole bunch of photos I plan to post taken in my travels through France. This one was taken in Sarlat-la-Caneda, which is located in the Dordogne region in southwestern France. Don't have much to say about this particular photo, except that I like the lighting, so will just pass on some info from Wikipedia: "Sarlat is a medieval town that developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. The medieval Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. It owes its current status on France's Tentative List for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site to the enthusiasm of writer, resistance fighter and politician André Malraux, who, as Minister of Culture (1960–1969), restored the town and many other sites of historic significance throughout France. The centre of the old town consists of impeccably restored stone buildings and is largely car-free." Another interesting fact I learned from the Wikipedia article is that Sarlat-la-Caneda is a sister city to Ashland, Oregon - which is very close to where I live, though I have no idea what connection the two towns have...

This is typicall a modern digital cam offers and does to pictures. I'd prefer the original shot. Sorry for my critiques.

Excellent post work my friend, and far better than what the out of cam would have given.

Beautiful. Your signature style suits these types of shot so well. Great work.

To N8Dreams: I don't see the point of your comment. I welcome constructive criticism, but why bother just informing me that you don't like the style of photos I post?

Very beautiful photo. Without the modern stuff in the street, you would swear you stepped back in time. I love the street and its great texture. You hit a home run with this one.

I think the coloring works really well - the icy blue cobblestones and buildings leading in to the warm golden glow of the building at the end of the alley, with the somewhat forlorn face looking at us from the wall on the left. The only suggestion is a slight change to the color of the sky as it, at least on my monitor, comes out as a muddled grayish-green - but that's the only minor change I would consider in an overall excellent picture.

To erskogly: I appreciate the suggestion & it has some merit. I had noticed the same thing myself as I was editing this photo, but didn't really have a good idea about how to change it, so decided to leave it as is.

Richard: I didn't communicate very clearly - I didn't mean that I didn't know HOW to change it, I meant that I couldn't decide what to change it to. It's a very well-defined area, so I could easily select it & create a new layer from it...

I love this effect, had it just rained or were the streets polished with age? The way HDR works that is a tantalizing mystery. Not surprisingly I find N8's comments stupidly offensive....there are many genre's now available in digital that did not exist in film and to blanket smear them is revealing a conservative narrow minded imperialism. Keep on working it my friend. I love the sensual colors and details you have captured here.

brewgirl: Thanks for your encouraging words. The ground was wet, though I honestly don't remember if it was from rain or the streets being hosed down to clean them.

Having travelled much in France I think you have captured the atmosphere so well and the post work has added interest. Contrast between the ancient and the modern touches of the parked car and the wall poster is typical!
