Description

Charles Cordier, a Frenchman, was Europe's premier ethnographical sculptor. He studied intensely. He treated his subjects as exotic beings and not stereoptypes. Here he captures the individual essence of a young, extroverted, tribeswoman. This sculpture of bronze and Algerian onyx-marble was made in 1862. Emperor Napoleon III, who reigned between 1852-1870 was the first to acquire this composition. It is now housed in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Cordier, captioned its as - La Capresse Des Colonies (The Goat Tender of the Colonies). The sculpture reveals two things simultaneously. First, it shows how much of a person's aura and vivacity is absorbed into the creation and secondly, it shows how much of the creator is painstakingly poured into it from a cellular level. It is as if the creator and the creation become one.

An outstanding sculpture & a fine shot of it - the lighting shows it off very well & I like the double intersecting shadow. When I was in Paris several years ago, the Musee d'Orsay had an exhibition of dozens of sculptures by Cordier & I found them both beautiful & fascinating...

Yes, I see what you mean. She is gorgeous and regal. I have never seen a sculpture with two types of materials. Ingenious and so beautiful. Thank you for the history behind this lovely piece. It really adds so much.
