Description

Mavis drives a hard bargain, but at least Sipho will get some basic computer skills. Thank you to Ockham for the retro kitchen stuff.

Sounds like a good deal for Sipho, as I'm sure it must do to him. I'd be jumping at the chance. Sounds like the educational system isn't much better than that in the States: you don't leave high school with any real skills, nor at all prepared for life. Parents punt the responsibility for that to the schools - well, mine did! - but really, parents must shoulder at least part of that. Sipho's lucky he has Mavis: he's built like a labourer, so it seems to me that would have been the next logical step, regardless of what his aspirations might be. And that's if you can get a job even doing that. :-/

Robyn, you are right. Schools want good marks in the final examinations - the number of "distinctions" get reported and raises the prestige of the schools. So learners are encouraged to take easier subjects: "maths literacy" instead of mathematics, etc. Anything involving numbers is a problem, so science and accounting are avoided. It is possible that a learner would finish school without any subjects that could be useful in the workplace. The other problem is that there are so many child-headed and granny-headed households, because of the toll HIV-AIDS has taken on the country. So, no parents to take an active interest in the education of the young people.
