Description

Cordulegaster boltonii. male. The day I took this was an excellent insect-pic day. On the dogwalk I got a Small Skipper, and then this Golden-ringed Dragonfly visited my garden. He zoomed around all over the place as high as the roof and as far as next door and eventually stopped to get his breath back for one minute only on my new rose arch. Hooray! I got about 6 shots before he was off again. They are not very frequent visitors to gardens as they prefer running water, so there will be no eggs in the pond. A warning about being too hasty. I moved this from RR to Flickr this July 2012, and it got into the 'Explored' with 300 views and 17 comments! Such an event! Then I discovered I had posted it TWICE and deleted the wrong one! Serves me right for being too 'tidy'! So now to make me feel better I'm re-posting it here.

Like being visited by Royalty almost!! A beautiful specimen and a cracking shot Andrea, well done again. Thanks for the fav, The school had a separate building for boys/girls and girls, strangly infant mixed and senior girls only. I was just 5 then so didn't think much of senior girls or infant ones!

I think they somehow know you are their friend and that's why they pose so nicely for you. Stellar image.

I reckon this was one of the rare photos that was actually worthy of 'explore'. The algorithm they use is crazy, and seems to only want to pick up dolls, faded shots of girls with dolls.......or worst of all............INSTAGRAM FLUFF!

This photo does look familiar to me, perhaps you posted a similar great shot of a different dragonfly a while back? The perch also looked familiar. Anyway, great photo!

What a superb creature and a not-too-common POV...rarely to dragonfly sorts of people let you see the lower parts of their faces and here you get a wonderful view of that mandibular region! That's where a dragonfly keeps its beauty, you know...thus they are protective of it and generally distract you with their eyes and their wings. This one approves of you! What a shot as well! Simply brilliant!

Your little TZ seems just wonderful for close-ups - so, would you say, the best to get is the #3 for macros? (might be upgrading one fine day, to have something to carry around with me, while my Fuji Finepix is often too bulky!) BTW my favourite insect, nicely cropped! BB (I have been awfully busy, the last 2 weeks, not much time for posting nor commenting, sorry to have neglected you)

I agree with Mark. Somehow they know to pose for you. I only ever see them flitting about in the distance, usually several feet above my head!

A well done result. Dragons are so hard to capture. They are real great looking dragons. I found one last year in a light rain hanging on a tree. After taking some not so good shots because of her resting place I tried to get her on my finger and do some better shots. Posted here on RR.

Amazing capture! Love how crisp and clear the wings are, and all the fine mouth parts! Superb Andrea!! I have to go look if they sell your camera here. It takes such superb macros!
