Description

Biosphere II is a famous habitat which was built as an experiment to see if people could be sealed totally and completely in their own environment, and sustain themselves. In order to make the huge glass greenhouse work, so that the windows would not pop out, they built two giant "lungs" in the ground. Each has a membrane that can move up and down. When it is hot, the air in the greenhouse expands, and the membrane in the lung rises. When it is cold, the air contracts, and the membrane collapses. This tunnel leads from the greenhouse area to one of the lungs. Found near Tucson, Arizona, USA.

surreal. I get itchy just looking at this, feel trapped and stuck. It would take the right kind of people to live there.

Great shot. The curvature, coloring and lighting mikes it look like a dream scene.
