Description

This privately owned Boeing N2S-3 'Stearman' was parked at the ramp during MAAM's 22nd Anniversary World War II Weekend 'A Gathering of Warbirds' at Spaatz Field. I love the F4U 'Corsair' and the P-38 'Lightning' for their looks. And I love the P-51 'Mustang' for its looks and the beautiful sound of the Merlin engine, but none of these aircraft evoke the same feelings in me than this Stearman. Its sort of like owning an old British sports car, like a MGA, or an Austin Healey Sprite 'Bug-eye', or maybe a Triumph TR-3. None of these are very sophisticated or reliable, but oh what fun they are, tinkering around with them, working on them, and taking them out for a spin. The same with this old bi-plane. Its not about speed, or noise, its just open cockpit flying, wearing the appropriate gear, listening to the low-pitched engine sound and being free. It was mentioned on my previous uploads for this event about the engine sounds. All these aircraft sounded good, with the Mustang's Merlin engine by far making the sweetest music, but it was standing next to these old Stearmans and listening to them starting up what made me want to fly in them. Tara I hope you like this. I could just picture you taking a ton of pictures of this old bird, pictures of things I would never dream of. This picture was taken on 2 June 2012, Sig...

Oh I love this style of plane very much. :)))) One of our friends that is no longer able to fly owns a bi-plane. :))))) His wife never liked him flying, but I think where he was in the air force the love of flying was in his blood. :))) Most excellent capture my friend. :))))) Thank you for sharing. :)))) Carry A Smile In Your Heart :))))

Great photo, and colourful subject! Must admit, as much as I enjoy the music of Merlins, I'm a diehard radial fan.

That is SUCH a pretty little plane! I love the look of it ... even the idea of it ... and it has my favorite engine, too. Thank you, my friend! It's a marvellous photograph, and it evokes so much.
