Description

In the years since I’ve visited the Hebik lands, I have changed. The Hebik people have changed as well. And despite this, there are things that remain: constants. Lines of continuity. Relationships. Alliegances. Feuds. One constant lies in the overall pattern of life among the Hebik people. Their earliest sagas depict them as sedentary people: earth-workers, tillers, herds-folk and herbalists. In the modern day world, the Hebik people are recognized for the absence of flash and ostentation: they are world-renowned farmers and doctors, preservationists, and ecologists. They are gentle people—if one may look only at National Character, and I count dozens of them among the most intimate of my friends. The Hebik people have always been open. Unfixed. Adaptable. They remain so now, and so it is no surprise that in this age of political upheaval and incendiary social change, the lands of Heb remain neutral in their political stance. The Hebik people have always despised war and the failure that it represents, and so the Heb does not enter into the squabbles and frays of the surrounding world. In an attempt to understand this, I walked with a friend to an ancient temple. At one time, it was an attraction for both pilgrims and tourists. Now it is little more than a half-crumbling curiosity. Heb is a secular land now, though religious sentiments remain. A woman may still be a door in Heb, but one must now question the threshold she represents: is it a literal thing or a metaphor that only the Hebik might recognize? I do not know and the Hebik, themselves, are mysterious and withdrawn with their answers. I hope to gain understanding, and though I share nothing in common with the ancient Hebik faith, I find myself walking through various temples, often given free reign to the places of silence within. I will learn something. Eventually. * I didn’t actually plan to make a return to Heb and to the Hebik people. I’m not surprised, however, that I have done so. In looking at this image, have realized that I cannot separate it from the imaginary realm it has created, and I suspect that I will visit Heb again, in a full story. I will learn the names of various Hebik people, and witness various customs, intimacies, and scandals. Until then, here is a simple image. A day-time shot of the church walkway on Michigan Avenue. This is the basis of an earlier post, involving photogmark’s lovely lady. There may be more to say later, but until then, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting.

Excellent image. It conjures up images of hooded and robed figures heeding the call to vespers. As usual your story telling is superb and leaves me wanting more.

That is so lovely and peaceful, and somehow timeless--it could very well be somewhere else quiet and serene!

The view prepares me for mystery, for the learning of something deep and wise. By the time I turn that corner, I am ready to hear. Now isn't THAT interesting? Architecture as coersion. Hmmmmm. I'm sure they didn't think of it in quite that way. I'm sure it's supposed to lend a certain gravitas for those already in the know. Deep and wise has never panned out, in my experience. It's the throw-away lines that contain the secret of life. An unrelated thought: I wonder what sort of doors men might be?

Reminiscent of a monastery and asceticism. After are the week's heavy metal, I would come here for a week and enjoy the tranquility. And then I must mingle with people .... I am a big city rat Solid building!

Really inspirational thoughts and insights, Chip. I always really enjoy reading the information, or even any opinion pieces that you include with your compositions. I respect the way you have noted the Ancient Hebik lifestyles and included an unbiased view of not only how they viewed themselves, but of the way they are currently viewed now as well, even during massive social change and political upheaval as the world is today. It's really amazing, though undeniably inevitable the way people and cultures have shifted with time and evolution. I guess when they say “life happens” ... it’s quite true. A stunning composition as well, my Friend! I find your images are always most curious and intriguing.
