Description
Dama Gazelle (Gazella dama ruficollis)
Dama gazelles live in groups of 10 - 30 females and young. There are also small bachelor groups and lone adult males. Adult males establish a territory and win temporary control over the females that enter it. Territorial fights are mostly ritualistic involving gestures and display of horns. During the rainy season group sizes may grow to form herds of 100 – 200.
Dama gazelle migrate according to season, with populations living to the south of the Sahara moving north into the desert during the rainy season.
Dama gazelle are under threat from hunting, excessive grazing by domestic livestock, agricultural development, and other changes to their habitat.
