Description
This is the Gatekeeper butterfly (Pyronia tithonus) also known as Hedge Brown. The sexes are similar but the female lacks the dark scent patch seen here on the male forewing. The eye spots on the forewing usually has two pupils. The underside of the forewing is largely orange and the hindwing is yellow and brown with brown-ringed white spots. The butterfly is very fond of bramble blossom and Winter is passed as a caterpillar. Size 19mm. Please zoom for more detail.

A beautiful macro.

Beautiful butterfly. But I love your quite impressionistic points, made with flowers and DOF use. Bravo

A cracking capture, my friend. I've only seen one butterfly, as opposed to a moth, this year. That was a couple of days ago, at Castle Ward, on the edge of Strangford Lough, County Down, Northern Ireland, yards from where they film part of the 'Game of Thrones' TV series. Back in Glasgow, today, the sun came out and stayed out. Somebody at the Met office must have made a mistake somewhere .. ;o) Warm regards, John.
