Description

The repeating structures of the storm surge barrier protecting the large river delta and the people living behind it from extreme high water. It's part of a very large Delta plan (as it's called) to protect the entire delta from flooding as it did in 1953. It's 9km (5.6 miles) long. It took 11 years to complete. It is essentially an open dam which only closes when the waterlever goes above 3 meters above normal. Because it's normally open to the sea, the ecosystem behind the dam is preserved.

This is so deliciously stark. Black and white is the perfect choice for this as it highlights the mathematical precision of this place! It's so industrial and functional: no frills, no glamour, no fussy-business and that crisp, clean efficiency is really superbly captured here. I like this a lot.
