Description

Shot in the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge, Near Tishomingo Oklahoma USA. Caught him/her finishing up a meal on this limb about 6 feet off the ground. Walked towards him taking shots every couple of feet. I was able to get pretty close, I didn't want to interrupt him enough to scare him off, as it turned out he wasn't about to give up his meal, all the while keeping a watchful eye on me.

I love watching hawks and having several varieties live in the woods around me. There is a silly Blue Jay who mimics their hunting cries just to scare other birds away from food he wants. I have some chickens now that are out several hours in the morning and evening (it still being too hot midday) which are the hawks' main hunting times. I keep an eye on the chickens but so far the hawks haven't bothered them, probably because the area is so full of rabbits, varmints, other birds and maybe even small snakes that keep them fed and happy. I was sitting outside watching the chickens one morning when a mid-sized hawk came out of the woods to my right in a quiet glide about 15-20 ft off the ground and 40 ft from me, he eyed me and the chickens, flapped a couple silent flaps and continued his glide to his tree on the left about 250 ft away down in the hollow. Neat stuff~ Lovely image and so glad you were able to get close!
