Description
Most days we would be up at dawn and out in the park all day until the sun began to set. One day, however, we found ourselves in camp around lunch time. While I was munching on a sandwich I noticed Mark looking up into the branches of a large tree. He noticed me looking and called to me to come over for a look. A small bird was flying up to the trunk of the tree, flapping his wings for a few seconds and then flying away. This behavior was repeated every few minutes.
I asked Sam about this and he told me about the Red Bill Horn Bill. When it is time to lay eggs, the couple will find a hole in a tree trunk. After the nest is built, the male will wall in the female with mud and twigs. She will stay there until the chicks have hatched. The male feeds the female through a small hole in the mud wall. We watched and took pictures as the future father continued to feed his bride. Suddenly Mark saw movement behind the hole in the wall. He became excited and rushed forward to get a closer look. As he did, a small greenish blob shot out of the hole in the wall forming a beautiful arc as it flew through the air and narrowly missed hitting him in the head.
Below you can see daddy at work. That's daddy on the right taking a break.
