The first major anti matter - matter collision occurred in a Midwest lab in the middle 21st century. It was supposed to fuel the 1st major fusion reactor in the United States. An enormous explosion occurred however but not outward but inward. It ripped a hole between our universe and the anti universe. It attracted a horrifying creature on the other side who fed not on organic matter but by inducing fear in organic creatures. Mostly telepathic, it could extend its influence in lesser creatures thousands of miles away. It attracted the humans to the rip and caused great panic and dismay. The creature had humans killing each other with total abandon. Planes would crash trying to bomb the hole shut. Suicides became common. Humans would have nightmares while awake and they could not tell between reality and the horrors they saw. Insanity and horrific illusions became normal and the creatures fed well. It slowly began to control and influence the humans to create more holes across the planet. More creatures began sample the new world and the humans slowly began to become overcome by the creatures. The only thing that saved the human race was that the creatures could not pass through the barrier to earths universe and vice versa. Meanwhile humans would wake up, live each day and sometimes die in a totally fear induced world. The creatures had humans build laboratories where they could study their samples. Maybe someday a way could be found to move into this new universe.
