Description

West Manhattan skyline. The first of two strongly contrasting takes of New York city. Here we literally see its dark, forboding side. Unapologetic, it's a city not to be taken lightly. Black and white conversion and special effects done in Perfect Effects.

It does indeed look foreboding here - stark and cold. Lovely postwork Roxy!

Perfectly shown. That bright sky and black city are a balanced contrast. The brightness makes the dark so much more sinister. The lack of detail gives the city a sense of having a comlplex and dense base. This seems a fitting contrast to your recent more colorful images of the city. I'm enjoying your photo work alot, but seem to be still missing your 3D tales. But I know change and variety are good.

fantastic black and white study--the silver really highlights the stark dark--another inspired and lovely cityscape.

Really gorgeous effect. Love the strong sense of negative space that your post-work created.

So much to see, so many people. Yet it is a place that can leave one cold and alone, lost in the darkness of the concrete jungle.

Oooh! Oooh! Yeah! There's a book, by Samuel R. Delany (one of my all time favorite writer) that serves as both fiction and family biography. If you're interested, the book is called Atlantis: Three Tales, and the first story/tale "Atlantis: Model 1924" has a lot in common with this shot...or maybe this shot has a lot in common with it. Well...they both have something to do with a common subject and they approach it in similar ways, even though that's a novella and this is a photograph. Anyway, in it, we're offered a "first view" of New York, and here, I get the same sort of emotional resonance. I suppose a person could think of a scene like this as being foreboding and somewhat intimidating; it definitely has a "muscular" quality to it, and it's as unapologetic as any city might be. That's the nature of cities, I think: unapologetic geometry. The contrasts between light and dark form an interesting tension here. It's not like they're butting heads or fighting, but the tension is there, and I think that it's enhanced by the fact that the only real details you see are in the water. Funny how the most changeable thing in this image has achieved the most complex definition. I get the sense you did that on purpose and it works so incredibly well. It's one of those surprises that makes visual art so much fun.
