Description

Recognized, globally, as a musical masterpiece, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik composed in 4000 BCE by the famous circadian composer Anonymous VIII, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, is a composition for treetop ensemble, popularized by Bavarian cicadas. The work is, written for a stridulating ensemble of six cicadas and one (optional) bush cricket. Modern interpretations of the composition are generally performed by full cricket orchestras, though a number of radical free interpretations have been arranged for performances by such diverse, interspecies performers as tree frogs, whole lemur colonies, and—perhaps—most controversially, four dolphins, an otter, and a penguin. In order to enjoy the full richness of the composition, one must listen to the definitive (and traditional) cicada renditions. Anonymous VIII is one of the most respected of all classical cicada composers, and it is no small irony that through the quirks of interspecies linguistic translation, the name Anonymous, when spoken in cicada buzzing cycles, literally means: “He Who Lands on Small Dogs.” Funny how that works. Today, there are numerous versions of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik arranged for solo, nocturnal cicadas. As I wandered around in Corey’s neighborhood, I heard such a rendition and actually saw the performer. Like a few urban cicadas, this one made appropriate use of a brick wall for his perch. He was a bit out of camera range and so I did what I could to coax him closer to my camera. I was rewarded for my efforts by a rather startling medley of famous cicada rattling compositions and snippets of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik were woven into the structure of that collage-type song. I snapped a photograph, though my model wasn’t entirely cooperative. What I ended up with were a large number of cicada-shaped blurs, but I’m happy to have this single shot: one that showcases the elegant, cape-like taper of this particular gentleman’s wings. Though I have numerous photographs of cicadas in my gallery, I’m rather surprised by the fact that I was able to get a nocturnal cicada shot. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great week.

Did you know we don't have them here? Dolphins and otters, yes, but no cicadas. Perhaps that was the inspiration for that controversial rendition. A Little Night Music in the PNW would have to be frogs in order for anyone to hear. And did you know the band Venom had an album of that name in the 1980s? Apparently AnonViii and Mozart and Venom share a common taste in late-night tunage. :D Love the image and the concert liner notes! You rock!

A really gorgeous capture of this insect! Ive recently become quite fascinated with them and their musical tendencies as I couldnt figure out for the life of me what that buzzing noise was when sitting in the garden the last few times. I thought (and this will sound silly) that the electric wires were doing something odd when someone pointed out to me at long last (my epiphany :) ) that this was in fact a cicada! I learned too, that though the buzzing may always seem alike to us, they are actually all different calls to express alarm or attract their mates! Pretty cool stuff and Im glad I got to see what these buggers actually look like now :) Wonderful subject, my Friend and always a pleasure to read your interpretation!

A wonderfully humorous and informative narrative. Excellent capture. You were lucky to get it. I understand cicadas hate the paparazzi.

funny you post this i just saw one the other day out by my garage door...that's where all the sunflowers are and i heard a buzzing noise and loud banging like noises and this bee was attacking this thing...it was much smaller but i think it stung it to death...i didn't have my cam..it was only up against the wall for a few seconds before they fell behind one of my large potted plants...your photograph is beautiful...i love the touch of green and how it plays with the overall reddish hue of the composition...excellent... chills and thrills

I wish we had some of them here - such impressive creatures. They are not as ugly as the first look will show - and they and their family will be here long after the time the humans disappear.
