Description

No, there were no macho, macho men when we visited a Masai manyatta the next morning. As we pulled up, we were immediately set upon by zillions of flies and dozens of children. The village headman had, for a fee, agreed to allow us to photograph some of the women and children. The males, believing the camera would trap there souls, were nowhere around. Apparently it was all right for us to trap the souls of the women and children. Picture taking was followed by a general sales melee with everyone pressing trinkets on us. The Masai have an interesting sales technique. If you tell them the first price is too high, they raise it! Traditionally, the Masai diet consisted of raw meat, raw milk, and raw blood from cattle. Today, the staple diet of the Masai consists of cow's milk and maize-meal. The milk is largely drunk fresh or in sweet tea while the meal is used to make a liquid or solid porridge. The solid porridge is known as ugali and is eaten with milk. Having sampled ugali I can testify that it would work just as well as wallpaper paste. We didn't stay long but it took us hours to get the cow dung out of the truck. Considering their houses were made of mud and dung and there were flies all over, their skin was remarkably smooth and unblemished.

We are far too squeamish .... but they do not know it differently. (I curse even when I stepped in dog poop.) And as for the men ....WIMPS! Class pic!!

What a marvel of a shot! It's funny how this seems "so different" from what we're accustomed to, in terms of living conditions, but once you break it down, it's exactly the same only a bit shamelessly naked. I can't say that I would want to live in a mud-and-dung structure, but there's something appealing about experiencing it once. I love the sale technique: Masai salesmen are obviously a bunch of surly smart-alecs. Gotta love that! So much for "the customer is always right." And as for this photo: I love the beauty of it: the colors, again, stand out, and the women and children are uniformly statuesque, and I love the Masai reds they're wearing.

They don't really look to happy about being props for your photo shoot. Can't say as I blame them. I wonder how often they must pose a month. Still I guess it's an easy way for them to get money. It must have been like traveling back in time. A wonderful experience to realize what we have. Well done.
