"Hey pretty lady." She rolled her eyes as she walked past. Knew he was watching her, looking her up and down. Seriously, couldn't he have come up with something better than that? She pretended she didn't hear him, turned her head away, so he couldn't see her smile. Or the interest in her eyes. She'd seen him get off the morning shuttle, surrounded by the new recruits. Fresh meat, only he wasn't so fresh. She could tell he'd been around, knew what he was getting into. He wasn't a raw newb, hadn't just come off base for his first posting. This guy knew his stuff - he had that easy manner about him, like this was nothing new. A slight arrogance in his bearing, the way his eyes searched around the cargo hold, while he joked with the others, tension in his shoulders and the way he carried himself. She'd watched him, as he hauled his crates off to the side, getting away from the chaos as everyone else milled about. Finding a quiet place for himself. He hadn't noticed her, too many people about. Until she'd walked past him. Resting easily, he watched her pass, a grin on his face. Pretty lady. Sheesh. He's going to have come up with something a helluva lot better than that, she thought. ****************************** First in a series I've been thinking about.
