Description
aka altostratus clouds.
Just one of several pics of this event, captured 9/3/12, very early AM, looking east, about a half mile from my heavenly haven.
A must ZOOM.
Since it was a narrow band of clouds, I snapped it in 16:9 aspect ratio. Glad I caught this particular monsoonal mass when I did, because that was about it for the day. It was all blue sky after it drifted off to the northeast.
A daily UK event? Probably most common in the southeast USA. Most rare around here.
-----------------------
The bases of altocumulus clouds typically appear between 6,500 to 20,000 feet (2,000 to 6,000 meters). Because of their lower altitudes, they are composed primarily of water droplets, however, they can also consist of ice crystals when temperatures are cold enough.
This type usually forms by convection in an unstable layer aloft, which may result from the gradual lifting of air in advance of a cold front. The presence of altocumulus clouds on a warm and humid summer morning is commonly followed by thunderstorms later in the day.

We do seem to have a lot of clouds here, Harry. This kind is certainly one of my favorite types. You really caught it beautifully.
