There are immortals in the world. They come in all shapes and sizes. Not all of them are grand or famous or amazingly powerful. Some are just trying to stay alive. Some are petty criminals and backstabbing assassins. They come from various places and are sired by various immortal parents. Some are made of light and goodness. Some are vile and filled with poison and hatred. Abdullah al’Agnar was such a one.

Nobody knew where he came from. He never knew himself. Those he called parents weren’t blood. But that was ages ago. All he knows is that he’s somewhere close to a hundred years old. But the years of war and blood and killing and prison have made that all merge into one long, unending nightmare. When an immortal goes to prison, it’s rarely forever. Somewhere along the way, the prison collapses before the prisoner does,… or he escapes,… or he’s set free because there’s no one left who remembers why he was there in the first place.

Somehow, Abdullah was set free. Not long after that, he ran into Hakish ben’Shalnasha, and they discovered they had something in common. Hakish had been looking for The Nightborne, the child he’d been told was born of one of Apep’s demonic serpents, a shapeshifting terror that crept into a young princess’ chambers one night, leaving her pregnant and quite insane. The young woman died in childbirth, and a swarm of asps carried the baby away,… or so the legend went. Here then was that child, a half-demon monster with a soul as dark as midnight and black poison in his veins.
