Description

Just a little vignette of this weekend's activities... Saturday morning, the Hospice folks at my Dad's nursing home had a little gallery show of some of his photos (he's the one who got me started in photography), and also a really wonderful celebration to thank him for his 20 years of service to the USA. He was in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years; he enlisted in the Army Air Corps before there ever was a U.S. Air Force. His unit flew some very dangerous missions during the China-Burma "Hump" operation in WW2. He was one of the crew that maintained the cargo aircraft (C-46s, C-47s) that flew the vital materials over the Himalayan Mountains. He actually flew on some of the airlift missions. His unit recieved a Presidential Unit Citation by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the first such award made to a non-combat organization. Some of his photos are displayed at the upper left. Below that are pictured (L to R) my Cousins Glen Cogan, Sandy Cogan (Tim's wife) Tim Cogan, my Aunt Esther (Shelley) Cogan, Dad (Carl), and my wife Jo beside him. At upper right, Dad was presented a nice framed award, medal, and cap. Below that, Dad with some of the staff at the nursing home. Dad always had a way with the ladies (still has, apparently...) Like I said.... My Hero! :-D Dad seems to be doing as well as can be expected. At 93, his memory is pretty much gone - some days are better than others, but he still recognizes most of the family - most of the time. I hope he remembers this day for the rest of his days. ------------------------------------------------ Things have been pretty chaotic and busy lately, and I'm - once again - getting used to a different shift (days... YAY!). It's settling down a bit, so I hope to get the next page in the T.N.A. series completed in the next few days. There's a lot more coming (and the Girls are getting help from some other Rendo friends, too!), so stay tuned! Thanks so much for all your visits, comments and support! You really brighten my day, my friends!

With my own Dad going into hospice this week, this is a bit bittersweet. But I was hoping for something very much like this at his eventual memorial/wake. Thanks for sharing Rod.

Wonderful shots! My dad passed away three years ago at 86. He was in the Army Air Corp as a radar man in the China-Burmese Theatre.

Rod, you did such a nice job on this moving dedication to your Dad. He is a true Hero, and I'm sure had a lot to do with who you are today. You're words here brought a tear to my eye and I'll be sure and keep you're family and especially your Dad in my prayers.

an excellent tribute to a fine man rod. this is precious. i wish i could say this from my father -i burned all his photographs. but the thing is although he was a brutal sob,i start thinking of him on 2 levels. one is the dark side he had and the other one is the good things he gave us,education, manners respect.etc. so i am in turmoil sometimes but my sister and me we talk often about our childhood and things come to light. and this 3d world is a kind of therapy for me,i often work little memories into my works. hug your dad the flying tiger.

This is one brilliant dedication for your dad Rod, he sure looks like he has a way with the ladies, even at 93.. Sounds like he had a busy life in service for his country, good on him!! The photos in the albums look great, he was a great photographer also.. First class work on putting this together my friend, I hope enjoys the time he has in the nursing home with those fine ladies ;-) Have a super new week and greetings from down under!!

The unsung heroes of logistics - what a guy mate as were all who fought in that conflict! This airlift operation was one heck of a feat to achieve, even though the results were dissapointing on the ground. A bit of a sideshow for Doug M's island hopping campaign! Thanks for sharing HotRod, this is great, mate!

93 is up there... at 49 I'm feeling my body slip slide'n away - lol... and just 10 years ago, I still felt like I just got out of high school and this year was my 30th anniversary - I missed it too... oh well... I plan on going on the 50th when I may be the only one going - lol I can tell which one is your Dad, great tribute, but which one is your Wife???
