Description
On May 29, 1937, a pair of Tupolev SB Soviet bombers attached to the Spanish Republican air force raided port of Ibiza, in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea. The German pocket battleship Deutschland, which was part of the International Non-Intervention Committee patrol, was anchored off Ibiza and was misidentified by the bombers' crew as the Nationalist heavy cruiser Canarias. Two Soviet pilots, dropped their bombs on the Deutschland, causing severe damage on the ship and killing 31 sailors.
The following day in retaliation for the air attacks on the Deutschland, the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer shelled the port and the city of Almeria, resulting in 19 deaths, 55 wounded, and the destruction of 35 buildings.
This retaliation, unlike the bombing of Guernica by the Condor Legion, under command nationalist, was made under the banner of the Third Reich from the nominally neutral Germany.
The Spanish Republic government discussed the possibility of declaring war on Germany.
