Description
For some reason I found the shadows in Nepal especially harsh. She was in deep shadow so I had to work to salvage this image, hence the supper grain.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Nepal everyone worked. If you didn't work you didn't eat. As a result children were left to their own devices. While momma worked children were free to amuse themselves even if it meant eating whatever they found on the ground. Her clothing, the silver bangles on her wrists and ankles and her well-fed appearance told me she was loved and cared for. Nepalese I spoke with would sometimes point out orphans. They were the ones who wore burlap sacks.
For all its graininess, this is a wonderful photo and your description of the 'working & living' conditions is a stark reminder of what the other parts of the world deal with
It's easy to see how deep the shadows would be there just based on the sharpness of her shadow on the ground. Nice save!
We think of it as a hard life and they simply think of it as "life." One of the big sore points that convinced the Europeans that Native Americans were not humans, but animals, was what they saw as a lack of discipline toward their children. Strange practice for us to leave a child this young unattended, but they seem to live by the adage that "it takes a village to raise a child." It seems to work in this case.
Lovely child and I'm glad you were able to save this. It's a heart-breaking story. We really don't realize how good we have it. This is a great reminder. I hope she is well today.
