Description
Cannery Row is an area in Monterey, California that was immortalized by the John Steinbeck novel of the same name. It used to be the site of sardine canning factories, but the last one was closed in 1973. Today, it's a tourist area with souvenir shops, hotels, restaurants, & the state of the art Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is well worth visiting. You can see a little bit of the slick, modern, touristy element in the right foreground of this photo, but what I was trying to emphasize were the battered, ramshackle elements that are more in the spirit of the area's colorful & gritty past...
Shameless plug for my other gallery:
Since I have been focusing on photography, I have been neglecting my other creative outlet, which is on display in the Bryce Gallery. I posted the first new piece I've done in many months a couple of days ago & invite you to visit it here, particularly if you enjoy surreal or psychedelic art.
End of shameless plug.

Excellent photo of the historical locale.

Well done - I was there just a couple of weeks ago and have to say you captured the historical feeling well while avoid the commercialism that is almost everywhere.

whaleman: I appreciate your honest criticism. I'm trying to create images that are somewhere between photography & painting. If you're more into pure photography, then my style may be going too far afield for you. It's a very subjective thing, obviously, & there is no right or wrong, is there?

Oh man. I LOVE this!! I like your style, as you know, but sometimes an image really jumps out at me as being something just right. This is top drawer stuff, my friend. Outstanding image!

The use of over the top HDR is perfectly artistically justified here. It really brings out the gritty sense of decay and crumble. I too use HDR as you know but mostly in a softer sense for vibrancy and some detailing. It is a matter of degree and not kind. Whaleman certainly is a more realistic photographer and many of the rank find HDR to be too creepy for their tastes. It is just that, taste. It does well to remember that HDR is just bringing out, in extreme form, what the camera shot. Every pixel was there to be played with, how much you choose to play is totally a matter of preference and not right or wrong.
