Description

Sometimes you just get lucky. To take a little break from a couple of projects I've been spending a lot of time on I decided to take a road trip along the California and Oregon coast. Passing through Monterrey, California mid-afternoon a few weeks ago I decided to stop for the night rather than pressing on. That evening as I was enjoying an adult beverage the bartender happened to ask me where I was planning on watching the space shuttle fly over the following day. I thought he was joking until he explained that the retired space shuttle Endeavor was being moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles to be placed on display at the Los Angeles Science Center. He recommended the Monterrey Bay Aquarium as a prime spot and since the aquarium is one of my favorites it was an easy decision. The next day around 10:30 the 747 carrying the shuttle appeared on the horizon and flew almost directly over us, at an altitude of about 1500 feet, as you can see. Enjoy.

While I'm not American, I am rather fond of the old shuttle, despite the tragedies that sometimes dooged her. This is such a wonderful shot, am so jealous; I would love to have seen this for myself.

Superb POV and capture! You can even see how beat up the bottom of the shuttle is in zoom. :D And this is the last time for one to be seen flying in the air!

That was very lucky indeed for you, perfect timing Dennis and that must have been a sight for sore eyes - spectacular! Good ol' bartender, very useful, in more than one way ;) I saw it happening on our TV news here in Australia - in a more modest way, still a marvel in my books - congratulations! BB

I sure hope you tipped that bartender well!!! Lol This is probably the finest photo of any of the Shuttles I've seen, including the official NASA photos! Great Job!

I'm surprised more people have not uploaded shots, considering how many were taking pictures. I got some shots of her leaving Florida. This is a super nice capture of Endeavour.

The right place at the right time. Doesn't stumbling into something like this make it all the sweeter?

what a fortunate occurrence and superb capture. I shot a shuttle before while it was taking off from the old Carswell AF base via the 747 but I was nearly a mile or more away shooting with my 50- 500mm lens with a 2x convertor.
