Again, a very ahistorical perspective. People across the spectrum both in Austria and Germany overwhelmingly approved the Anschluss. Austria had been the core province of the Empire for about half a millennium. The old German empire had been ruled from Vienna. In 1919 the constitution of Austria contained a clause that it was the aim of the country to join Germany proper. The allies, at the insistence of France, prohibited that for power politics reasons.
