Description

I love trees. From far away and close up, they are amazing. Imagine yourself an ant, traveling through these canyons. The following information is from a placard at San Antonio Botanical Gardens. Sugarberry (Southern Hackberry) Celtis laevigata Cannabaceae (Hemp family) Nuevo Leon, Mexico, through Texas, east to Florida; North to Missouri, Indiana, Virginia Hackberry can be readily identified by its smooth, silvery bark and prominent corky warts. Foresters invented the term Sugarberry to distinguish this smooth-leaved riparian form from the more northerly Common Hackberry. C. occidentalis. The term "Hackberry" refers to the unrelated Scottish "hagberry" or marsh cherry. Many a Southern church pew was built from hackberry, which is preferred by some turners for its soft, pale grain. Few other American trees can match the ecological value of hackberry's thin, datelike fruits, which ripen late in the year and attract flocks of wintering birds.
