Description

Western Washington State is a land of coniferous forests. Before the timber industry came into full swing in the late 19th century and through most of the 20th century, Washington was home to some of the largest trees in the Western Hemisphere. Today almost all the old growth forests are nothing more than a memory. We camp on grounds that were originally logged about 100 years ago. Here is a stump of one of those old giants. This stump stands taller than I do...I am guessing it stands about 7 feet tall. What is it? Probably Cedar. Seven of the most common trees in Western Washington today are Western Hemlock, Douglas-Fir, Western Red Cedar, Sitka Spruce, Ponderosa Pine, Red Alder and Pacific Yew. The timber industry today must reforest the lands they cut, but we'll never again see the likes of the trees that were here 100-150 years ago. Even the stumps are impressive but they are all rotting away...year by year... Bill

A super shot Bill and you just wonder how tall it was and how majestic it looked in its day.

WOW! that is indeed a big one. Some things should be left alone and they should have left atleast half of them alone. World is changing. It always was. Often not to the better. But this is a really beautiful shot. :)

Another sad legacy of greed and complacency with the results of that greed... A gorgeous shot, Bill - too bad the tree itself wasn't there for your camera.

Isn't it a shame that all these beautiful trees have been cut. It is the same down here and now we only have a few places with the old ones left. This is a lovely capture of this beautiful old stump with its moss covered bark. Great to see a posting from you again too.

I love your picture of this old stump, and the moss and other plants that are slowly consuming it. It saddens me to think anyone would cut such a magnificent tree down, but your photo shows how nothing in nature really ends, it just serves as a platform for the next generation.
