Description

Colletes hedera. They are all over the ivy flowers when it's sunny. "Colletes hederae was recorded as new to Britain in 2001 when Ian Cross discovered specimens at Langton Matravers in Dorset. Since then, the bee has spread across much of southern England and into south Wales, and is now extremely plentiful in some coastal localities, and increasingly, inland." info from BWARS This colony is on the cliff at Alum Chine where the insects can burrow easily into the sand if the cliffs. Thanks for the interesting info, Andrea. And this is a very special shot! btw: Today I saw an albino bee. In any case, the insect was totally bright white. I've never seen such a thing. I followed him with my camera, but could not take a picture, unfortunately. It flew into the flowers of the Policeman's helmet.

Capital clarity, composition and lighting in this fine macro of the busy bee, Andrea. Never heard of that particular species before, which should come as no surprise, and interesting about the sand.

From your flicker image it appears they are serious party animals. This is an excellent photo. I like how its wings are carefully folded and there is little pollen on its legs. Very neat. Since they have taken hold so well, I hope they are beneficial.
