Description

OK - In my last upload I mentioned that the air is so clear at this location... Here's how clear it actually is... And this is a first, folks - I've captured something in a photo I've never been able to before. Looking up into the starry sky (not sure of my directions here, but I think we're looking south to south-west. You will see near the lower center a string-of-pearls streak from a high-flying airplane. To the left of the streak, you will notice a light, cloudy looking area that extends upwards. That is the Milky Way - we are looking towards the very center of our galaxy. I have never captured a photo of this in my life until tonight! What a vacation! 30 second exposure at 1600 ISO, f5.6

Safe to say you brought your tripod? Great capture of things we rarely see let alone get on film...er, digital. That old film thing just sounds better doesn't it? Must have something to do with age...lol.

This is one fabulous capture Rod love the night sky.. I love it when we are down at our place in the country the sky is so clear will have to take some shots and post them. Even get to see many shooting stars some small and some really large their just amazing to watch. Also can see satellites crossing the sky and stationery GPS satellites also.. Spend many a night out lying on the grass or in the deck chair gazing at the sky..

I saw it right away, and I'm glad you verified for me what I was seeing. I bet you're having a fabulous time!! :) We sat out with friends in the middle of August and watched the Persead meteor shower and got eaten alive by bugs. Still, it was beautiful. I'm glad you got to see this, and even better, captured it with your camera!

I love it when the sky is that clear and there is no light pollution to blot out the stars. Reminds me of when I went camping with my martial arts group years ago. Out in a field in the middle of nowhere, no light pollution, not a cloud in the sky. You could lie on your back and stare up at the heavens and it was like looking into the galaxy.

During the summertime, I always enjoy it laying on the terrasse and watching the sky, the satelite, the planes who are landing to Alicante, the stars and sometimes - if I'm lucky, with the help of one of the doggies, a big ORB!

Beautiful seeing the different colors of the stars. I think you captured the TNA girls up there and not a plane as you state...snicker.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! NICE shot Rod! Not only is the clarity of the sky important but the amount of light pollution is also VERY important if you want to see the Milkyway. I can remember back in '87 when Holly and myself were on our honeymoon down in Hawaii on the isle of Maui we sat out on the beach as the the sunset and night deepened. After a time I was amazed to realize that what I at first thought was a wispy cloud suspended in the sky, was not moving. Then it got darker and darker and the "wispy cloud" became more and more pronounced until I suddenly realized that the reason that "wispy cloud" was not moving was because it wasn't a cloud at all, it was the Milkyway! The light pollution down there is so low that you can see the Milkyway VIVIDLY on any clear night! I wish I had taken pictures now. Up in the northern part of NH the stars and the Milkyway are very clear too. You two REALLY need to come visit buddy. Just think of it. Sitting by the campfire, looking up at the stars, a drink in hand, listening to the loons or owls calling in the night, the water gently lapping at the shoreline just fifteen feet away!

I'm so pleased you have been able to see this great expanse of sky on your vacation. I guess we are very lucky down here and just take it for granted that we will see all the stars most nights and I never think to take a picture of them. You have got me thinking now. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

You are looking south to see the Milky Way like this. And not one but two strings of pearls from aircraft.
