Description

There are many types of boats that operate on the waterways of Bangkok. But the true Thai river transport is the long-tail boat (reua hang yao), so called because the propeller is mounted at the end of a long drive shaft extending from the engine. The engine, which varies from small marine engine to a large car engine, is mounted on gimbals and the whole unit is swivelled to steer the boat. Long-tail boats can travel at a phenomenal speed. Most of the long-tail boats I observed on the Chao Phraya River and the various Khlongs had large 6-cylinder engines. The long-tail boats have a canopy and spray shields along its sides. Unfortunately I could not verify the phenomenal speed, because of traffic and waves, but one could sense the power of these boats. This picture was taken on Khlong Bangkok Noi on 11 August 2012, Sig...

That Long tail is really traveling at high speed. A very colorful paint job and you caught the wake nicely!
