Description
One of the treasures I acquired in Nepal is this Thangka. A Thangka is a Tibetan form of scroll painting. The image is painted on silk or cotton and mounted on the scroll.
This is the painted portion of my Thangka. It shows the Kalachakra Mandala. Kalachakra is a Sanskrit term used in Tantric Buddhism that literally means "time-wheel" or "time-cycles". Kalachakra involves the concept of time (kāla) and cycles (chakra): from the cycles of the planets, to the cycles of human breathing, it teaches the practice of working with the most subtle energies within one's body on the path to enlightenment.
It is said by some Buddhist masters that Kalachakra is the most advanced form of Vajrayana practice. Vajrayana is also known as Tantric Buddhism and is one of the three paths to enlightenment, the other two being the Theravada and Mahayana.
Anyone who was associated with the counter culture of the 1960s has probably heard of, or possibly practiced, Tantric sex. Close to Heaven indeed.
This is one you really should look at in zoom.

Fabulously intricate and very beautiful. I was unfortunate in my partners in the 60's..so I missed out on that particular delight!

This is gorgeous! I love the color combinations with a lot of blues, and warm golds and browns. The outer decorated circle makes me think of different colored metals. Beautiful capture and interesting information. I was 13 when the 60s ended, looked about 10, and was pretty generally clueless.
