In 2005 and after 31 years in the brewing industry I chose "Freedom 55" and retired early. This allowed me to follow my passion of scuba diving and travel. I moved out to Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada for 3 years and became a professional scuba instructer.  Shortly after returning from New Zealand in the fall of 2011, I have been having to deal with a couple of non diving related medical issues which has forced me to hang up the mask and fins for a spell. This should give me more time for taking pictures...lol.

"Most people can look back over the years and identify a time and place at which their lives changed significantly. Whether by accident or design, these are the moments when, because of a readiness within us and a collaboration with events occurring around us, we are forced to seriously reappraise ourselves and the conditions under which we live and to make certain choices that will affect the rest of our lives."

Sad commentary on a world where less matters more. The United States is one of those countries. If everyone would give a little and quit gripping about the abusers as an excuse to not help, we would perhaps see a world less on the verge of ugly times a'comin.

It seems that every corner is staked out now with someone begging for money or work or food or all of them...I know that many of them are NOT legit, but how can you tell which ones are truly needy? So sad that the world has come to this.

Same thing in Turkey, where many of the beggars are actually fairly well suported by the Govt and begging just suppliments a pretty reasonable state income.

Its hurts so much to see this. :( Their are 115 homeless kids in our city school system. :( I hope this mom and child get some much needed help. :) Most excellent capture. :) Thank you for sharing. :))

She looks to have chosen a very precarious place for a child. A very topical capture and a sad part of our world.

Being unable to separate the legitimate from the abusers, I tell them to go to the Salvation Army various centers because that is where I donate. I've been tempted to expose one fraudster who I have seen collecting money, then going straight to the beer parlour.

Whether they really need help or not, it always touches my heart strings when I see them - especially when they have a child with them.
